LIFE NITRATES is a European project promoted by the Government of Navarra’s Department of Rural Development, Industry, Employment and the Environment, its beneficiaries being the public companies GAN S.A., INTIA S.A.  and  the CRANA Foundation.

gavrn GAN S.A. is responsible for the study of groundwater by modelling the alluvial aquifer of the River Ebro. The nitrates in the aquifer come from farming activity, meaning that the amount of nitrates reaching groundwater can be limited simply by controlling the use of these methods.
intiasa INTIA S.A. will deal with the study of surface-water nitrate pollution. This work mainly focuses on the study of the effects of agricultural practices and the use of organic and inorganic fertilisers on nitrate pollution, studying incoming and outgoing pollution in a pilot irrigated basin.  It will also study incoming and outgoing nitrogen from farm slurry management in the intensive livestock farming pilot basin.
crana In order to ensure good dissemination of the project results at regional, national and international levels, and thanks to its great experience in the dissemination of environmental information and the promotion of related policies,  CRANA participation will centre on dissemination activities.
The three studies will provide a complete picture of the repercussions of the chief farming activities in Navarra on the nitrate contents of both surface water and groundwater. It will be possible to draw conclusions and appraise the action plans and measures currently being applied in the area under study and propose alternatives to the plans in those cases in which their effectiveness is not ensured.
